About #Brunei @ Undernet
Thursday, December 14, 2006
BKiD registered #Brunei on 28th January 1996, after realizing that there was no specific place where Bruneians could meet up and just communicate ONLINE.
Now, more than ten years later, #Brunei has transformed into a substantial entity with a user base of over 1000! (it can be you!)…. Quite a change from the 4 to 5 of us who used to hang out there during its infancy.
#Brunei is maintained by the channel operators committee which is made up of users with extensive experience on IRC. The founders and most Channel Operators are well known and sadly sometimes unfavored for their contributions to maintaining the peace and ensuring a wholesome environment in #Brunei.
The Channel Manager and his staff have worked tirelessly to maintain the image of Brunei Darussalam as the "Abode of Peace" in Cyberspace.
There are many Channels related to our country nowadays. #Brunei differentiates itself from others by being the first to exist, its well-maintained system and particularly the regulars/people (that's you!) who shaped #Brunei as it is today.

#BrUnEi Op Applicant Guidelines
Friday, October 27, 2006
The #BrUnEi Ops consists of people of different ages, station, backgrounds, races and religion. You do not have to be a resident of Brunei Darussalam to qualify, merely that you have an interest in our national IRC channel and are a regular chatter quite well known to us.
We are made up of students, local and overseas (UK, Oz, Malaysia) and of working professionals both in the Government and private sector. It has ALWAYS been our aim to diversify the members of our committee to better be able to provide a balanced view on the overall policy and guidelines the channel should have. Because half of the #BrUnEi Ops are more or less always overseas, it is more than likely you will find one or more active ops no matter what hour you may choose to visit!
There is no discrimination in our selection of new ops on race, gender, social/financial position or age and we have an extremely varied user base to prove that fact. There are however certain considerations to always bear in mind.
- Is the person a regular in our channel?
- How long has he/she been with the channel & whats the possibility of the person vanishing after being given access?
- Is he/she of sufficient maturity to be able to cope with the abuse and (supposed!) advantage access will grant?
- If the person is yet unemployed and has no recourse to funds rather than from his/her parents, will the granting of access provide them with an excuse to stay online and incur huge expenses for which they cannot afford?
- If students, will it be too much of a conducive factor for them to neglect their studies as has happened before?
When we get an op application, its sent to all our members for comments and votes, if the person appears acceptable but no one knows him/her it is usually asked that the person spends more time in the channel getting to know everyone. There are always ops around, though not necessarily opped keeping an eye out.
The Ops over the years have become good and close friends and usually meet each other up. When a person appears acceptable, they are usually invited first to such an Ops Gathering, this is where we will see if their submitted resume is real or faked!
A genuine, likeable person is hard to refuse and yes if you do say we’re somewhat fussy about it, you *may* be right, but unlike family, we have full ability to choose our friends and we will usually wish to choose well.
After the Ops Gathering, the votes are gathered in email and the applicant will soon know if they are accepted.
Keep in mind, all votes count, and knowing just one op isn’t usually enough, except for the channel manager of course J
If you’re still interested then click here.
Good luck!

Advanced Channel Rules
Tuesday, October 10, 2006
BNC (Bouncers)
BNCs running on Shell Providers may be used in the channel. However, to those people using modified PsyBNCs, please make sure that your nick parts #Brunei. The Ops will constantly be checking to make sure that nicks are not left idling in the channel.
PLACING BOTS IN #BRUNEI
Under no circumstances are chatters allowed to put bots in #Brunei unless authorised by the #Brunei admins. Anyone caught placing them in the channel will have their bot idents banned for a considerable period of time.
RACISM OR POLITICS
#Brunei will not tolerate with racism of race or matters that concerns the direct welfare of the Brunei government or the country. Conversations such as ways to improve finance in Brunei etc. should not be stopped. However, if one starts saying "Fxck the government" or being unconstructive with the context of insulting the present government the channel operators have the right to act .
ROYAL FAMILY
#Brunei will also not tolerate any comments related in anyway to the Royal Family. In addition, nicks belonging to them (example Pg_Muda or Pg_Anak or PAP or Sultan or their actual names should be considered sacrosanct - i.e., not usable in #Brunei unless proven beyond reasonable doubt that that person is what the nick says he is.
AGGRESSIVENESS
Users demonstrating excessive aggresiveness are to be banned - Incitation of "riots" for example saying that one football team sux, thus creating a situation where everyone starts fighting over whose team is better. Other than that, any sort of fighting in the channel is not to be tolerated. On that note, it is within an ops discretion to decide on who is being aggressive or not and the boundaries of certain forms of "aggressiveness".
NICKS/PHONE NUMBERS/SEX TALK
No forms of sex talk should be allowed in the channel. The channel is filled with minors under the age of consent and should not be exposed to such talk. The names of the people who own nicks should not be exposed in the main channel. Phone numbers should not be "sold" in the main channel.

#Brunei Channel Rules - Important
Monday, October 09, 2006
The Rules of #Brunei Channel are simple:
ON JOIN MESSAGES
Please turn off all ON JOIN messages when in #Brunei. If you don't know how to turn them off, Ask an OP to help you.
INVITES
Inviting others to join another channel is a kick/bannable offense. Besides being disruptive, it's rude. Similarly, flooding the channel with messages to join another channel will result in the user being banned and blacklisted.
BAD NICKS AND LANGUAGES
Any forms of bad nicks which constitute "racism" "drugs" or "sex" will be banned. Similarly, any person found using language considered taboo or insulting will be kicked and if the person still persist, will be blacklisted and banned - and this includes those words which "sound" like bad words - for example fxck, or pak, or fak. Opers are to watch out for these sort of words as auto-kicks cannot be placed on them.
BEGGING FOR OPS/VOICE
+v is given at the discretion of the opers, and ops of course through a thorough process after a formal application. Any form of begging (i.e., repeatitively asking for ops or +v) is to be discouraged with a kick then ban.
ASCII ART/LARGE POPUPS
Ascii art over 10 lines and popups over 10 lines. The scripts will kick, and it's a 24 hour ban.
USING CAPITAL LETTERS
It's a universal rule on IRC that using capital letters to chat is considered shouting. In most channels, this is considered rude and it is down to the discretion of the operators available to decide what action is to be taken on the offender.
ON TEXT EVENTS
Please turn off all ON TEXT events, except the standard !nick filename.wav One person doing a "You hurry back" on BRB is funny, 10 people doing it is ludicrous.
BEING AGRESSIVE
We don't allow any fighting in #Brunei. If you have a disagreement with someone, please take it private. Also, harassing the ops and continuous abuse in the main channel towards them may result in the offender being banned.
WAREZ
Talking about pirate software, or even asking about how to get it is a kick/bannable offense in our channel. People who develope software work hard on it, and stealing is ILLEGAL
FLOODING
Most OPS have scripts which will kick/ban for flooders. Repeating the same thing over and over is considered flooding, as well as running LARGE ascii art. If you wish to run large ascii art, ask the OP on duty if it's OK first, and don't be offended if they say NO.
